Bagamoyo Port: Transforming Tanzania’s Trade Future

The Bagamoyo Port project in Tanzania is poised to significantly enhance the region’s trade and connectivity. Expected to begin construction in 2024/2025, the project will be a game-changer for Tanzania’s economy. The port, located about 60 kilometers north of Dar es Salaam, will feature deep-water berths capable of accommodating ships with up to 25,000 containers, far exceeding the capacity of Dar es Salaam’s port, which handles 8,000 containers. This infrastructure development is part of the Tanzanian Mini Tiger Plan 2020, aimed at making Tanzania a logistics hub for East Africa.

The surrounding Bagamoyo Special Economic Zone (BSEZ) will further amplify the port’s impact, accommodating up to 760 production facilities, creating jobs, and driving economic growth. The Tanzanian government has allocated TZS 22 billion to start the initial phases of the project, focusing on building deep-water berths to handle larger vessels. This port is expected to play a pivotal role in regional trade by easing congestion at Dar es Salaam Port and providing port services to landlocked countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Despite early setbacks, the project is back on track under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration. With key advancements in land procurement and feasibility studies, the Tanzanian government is set to open tenders for private partners to join the project through joint ventures. Upon completion, the port will improve Tanzania’s trade infrastructure and cement its role as a key player in East African commerce.
