The long-awaited Jangwani Bridge project in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, is set to begin construction, following a $35 million contract signed between the Tanzanian government and a Chinese company. This crucial infrastructure development aims to solve recurring flooding issues in the Jangwani area, which often disrupt traffic, particularly during heavy rains. The current bridge frequently experiences water overflow, leading to the closure of Morogoro Road, a vital route to the city center.
The two-year project will be executed by China Communications Construction Company Ltd, under the supervision of the Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads). The new bridge, spanning 390 meters, will be complemented by 700 meters of connecting roads. The project is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve transportation infrastructure and foster social and economic development in Dar es Salaam.
Feasibility studies and designs for the Jangwani Bridge were conducted by CDR International BV of the Netherlands, in partnership with Deltares and Wema Consultant. The World Bank funded the studies at a cost of $905,123.95. The bridge is designed to address the severe flooding that has disrupted the area, making it a vital part of the Msimbazi Valley Development Program.
Tanroads CEO, Mohamed Besta, emphasized the importance of the project, urging the contractor to maintain professionalism and meet the project’s deadlines. Once completed, the Jangwani Bridge is expected to significantly improve the flow of traffic, reduce congestion, and make Dar es Salaam a more efficient and attractive city. This development is a major step towards modernizing the region’s infrastructure and improving the daily lives of its residents.
