Multi-Million Infrastructure Upgrade of Tanzania’s Kigoma Airport Regains Momentum

The multi-million dollar infrastructure upgrade of Tanzania’s Kigoma Airport has regained momentum with increased construction activities. This project aims to enhance the airport’s capacity to handle more travelers by upgrading its terminals and building a new control tower. Additionally, a new meteorological office will be constructed, and the parking space will be expanded from 15,000 square meters to 30,000 square meters. The upgrade work, which started in 2023, includes extending the runway to 3,100 meters and constructing a fence around the entire airport site. The Tanzania Airport Authority’s plan is to transform Kigoma Airport into a modern aviation center, with a projected completion timeframe of 3 to 5 years, depending on funding.

The Significance of Upgrading Kigoma Airport

The upgrade of Kigoma Airport is significant for improving the region’s transportation sector. Originally built in 1954 during the colonial era to facilitate government officials’ travel to western Tanganyika, the airport needs modernization to meet current aviation standards. Currently, Kigoma Airport serves the city of Kigoma and offers flights to Dar es Salaam and Bujumbura, the capital of Burundi. It also acts as a stopover for airlines operating within East Africa. Once the upgrade is complete, the airport will be able to serve more destinations and accommodate a higher volume of passengers. This enhancement will not only boost Kigoma’s connectivity but also potentially stimulate economic growth by increasing accessibility and attracting more airlines and travelers.
