Tanzania’s Dry Port in Dodoma: A Game-Changer for Logistics

Tanzania is making big steps in improving transportation with a new dry port being built in Dodoma. The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has secured 490 hectares of land for the Ihumwa Dry Port project. This port will make it easier and cheaper to move goods within the country and beyond, helping businesses save time and money.

The Ihumwa Dry Port is designed to reduce the heavy load at the busy Port of Dar es Salaam. It will work alongside the Kwala Dry Port, another facility under construction near the coast, 105 kilometers from Dar es Salaam. Once both ports are complete, they will improve how goods are handled, making transport faster and more efficient for exporters, importers, and businesses in Tanzania’s central regions.

The Ihumwa Dry Port will include railway connections, loading yards, and special areas for imports and exports. It will make it easier to transport goods like cement, construction materials, and machinery from inland to coastal regions or for export. TPA Director General Plasduce Mbossa shared that the land use plan is ready, meaning construction can begin soon.

The Kwala Dry Port, covering 500 hectares, already has five hectares paved for container stacking. It will serve as an inland extension of the Dar es Salaam Port, providing quicker customs clearance and smooth transportation via rail or trucks.

By 2025, the next phase of Kwala’s development will start, further boosting logistics services. Together, these dry ports will help reduce transport costs, prevent traffic jams, and provide businesses in construction, material handling, and concrete industries with a reliable, cost-effective way to move their goods. This makes Tanzania an important trade hub for the region.
