The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has officially kicked off the construction of the Elwak–Modogashe Road, a 749-kilometer infrastructure project designed to open up northern Kenya. Once complete, the road will improve accessibility across Isiolo, Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera counties — key zones for trade, security logistics, and community services.
Project Scope and Funding Breakdown
The development is valued at KSh 85 billion, making it one of the largest road projects in Kenya’s recent history. Funding includes:
- World Bank – KSh 81 billion (US$756.3 million) for upgrading 365km of road and 30km of spur roads, plus a high-speed fiber optic cable.
- African Development Bank (AfDB) – KSh 27.5 billion (US$215 million) for the 140km Elwak–Rhamu section.
The road is being built in four main phases, with active work already underway on the Isiolo–Kulamawe–Modogashe section.
Infrastructure Meets Equipment
Developing long-haul roads in arid, remote terrain demands robust construction equipment. From excavators to compactors and graders, these machines are essential for earthworks, precision leveling, and structural foundation. Their contribution ensures quality roads that support both light and heavy transport over time.
Closing Thoughts
The Elwak–Modogashe highway isn’t just a road — it’s a corridor for growth, opportunity, and lasting transformation. As Kenya continues building, the role of reliable machinery and collaborative funding remains crucial.
